Templates are documents, workbooks, or presentations that are used in Office 2011 for Mac as starting points to build new files upon. When you save a file as a template, it becomes available in the templates gallery of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. A classic example of a template is a business letterhead that contains both formatting and content ready to be filled in. Each application has built-in templates that you see when you choose File→New from Template. It’s easy to make your own templates, too.

To make a template, you start with something customized, ready to use as the basis of new files. All you have to do is to use Save As and change the Format pop-up menu to [Application Name] Template. The shortcut changes to My Templates, which is where you should save your template. Just give it a name, click Save, and you’re all done! Your saved template will appear in the template gallery of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint as appropriate.

Here’s how to install updates: Make sure your Mac has a working internet connection, then: Update Mac OS X. Open the App store and click on the Updates button. Install the updates. After, in any Office application go to the Help menu and choose Check for Updates to launch the AutoUpdate app.
Choosing File→New from Template opens the current application’s template gallery. Your saved templates will appear in the gallery under My Templates. When you open a template from the gallery, a new document identical to the saved template will open and it will have a generic name, such as Document 1, Workbook 3, or Presentation 2.

- Microsoft AutoUpdate makes sure your copy of Office will always be up-to-date with the latest security fixes and improvements. If you are an Office 365 subscriber, you'll also receive the newest features and tools. Check for updates and install. Open an Office app such as Word, then on the top menu, click Help Check for Updates.
- If you have Office 2011 for Mac or before, do NOT update to Catalina because Office will stop working. There’s no workaround for this. Office 2016 for Mac needs to be v15.35 or later, which it probably is, if you’ve updated anytime in the last few months. Check the version in one of the Office apps or go to Help Check for updates.
If you want to edit a template, choose File→Open. Change the Format to Template, and then navigate to the My Templates folder, select the template you want, and then click Open. When you open a template this way, it opens the template itself, as opposed to a new file based on the template. Choose File→Save to overwrite the template or File→Save As to create a new template.

Apple has long encouraged application developers to adopt the 64-bit runtime environment, and we've been hearing from customers that 64-bit versions of Office for Mac are desirable to enable larger address spaces, better performance, and new innovative features. All releases of Office for Mac after August 22, 2016 are 64-bit only.
What does this change mean for me?
- If you use Office for Mac but don't use any add-ins, you should be unaffected by this change.
- If you use or develop add-ins in Office for Mac, you may need to update those add-ins to 64-bit.
I develop add-ins or write VBA for Office for Mac. What do I need to know?
Microsoft Word For Mac 2011 Update To 64 Bit
- The primary impact of this change is to compiled add-ins. Office add-ins (add-ins using the JavaScript-based APIs) are not impacted by this change.
- The work required to update your add-ins for 64-bit will vary based on the code.
- For example, any use of VBA's DECLARE statement to load external functions in compiled dynamic libraries will require that those libraries support 64-bit. The VBA code itself will continue to work as VBA is transitioned to 64-bit, but you'll need to update the external libraries.
